    ¥ A band that includes profession and semiprofessional musicians. The focus of this organization is the concert band, marching band, Stage Band, Combo and ensembles. The membership ranges from 17 to 59 and is of mixed gender. The band meets each Tuesday from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., year round. Prerequisites for membership is audition and membership in the Arizona National Guard.

    ¥ Founded in 1959, the American Choral directors Association is a nonprofit music education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives through arts advocacy to elevate music's position in American society. ACDA is divided into seven geographic regions, as well as fifty state chapters, such as the Arizona chapter, each with its own conventions, newsletters, festivals and workshops. In addition to Regional and National Conventions and the publication of the Choral Journal, ACDA has numerous Regional and National Committees. The committees work in several areas of the choral profession, including establishing high performance standards, recommending quality
    choral literature, encouraging research in choral music, and advocating the importance of choral music in our society.

    ¥ The mission of the Arizona Association for Jazz Education is to assure the continued growth and development of Jazz and Jazz Education in Arizona. As a means of advancing its mission, the Association initiates programs which nurture and promote the understanding and appreciation of jazz and its heritage; provides leadership to educators regarding curricula, aesthetics and performance; assists teachers and practitioners with information and resources; and takes an active part in organizing clinics, festivals and symposia at local and regional levels.     ¥The Arizona Music Educators Association was established in 1939 as a cooperative effort of music educators. Since that time the association has become affiliated with MENC: The National Association of Music Education. Special interests in the Association are represented by four constituent organizations: The Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA), The Choral Directors of Arizona (ChoDA), The Arizona Society of General Music (AZSGM) and the Arizona Collegiate Music Educators (ACME). There are a number of departments within the Association that are led by appointed leaders. The National Coalition for Music Education, which is an advocacy group, is represented locally by the Arizona Coalition of Music Education and Community Performance. Other departments include membership, Music in Our Schools Month, early childhood development, curriculum development, retired members, multicultural awareness, music technology, student composition and pubic relations. AMEA support the activity of the
    MENC collegiate chapters (student), and Tri-M chapters which are high school student honorary organizations in Arizona.

  • ARIZONA RAGTIME DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND
    ¥ Performance of Ragtime and Early American Jazz sources in school and communities in Arizona.
    ¥ Our educational programs are administered through a special reserve fund contributed by friends of Jakki Knutson, a cofounder of our society. This Jakki K. Fund provides scholarships, jazz camp tuition and attendance awards at festivals for qualified young musicians in Arizona. Our continuing collection of musical instruments, music and educational programs in schools is an intricate part of R.J.S. activities.
    ¥ The society sponsors the Arizona Ragtime Dixieland Jazz Band. It's a semiprofessional group of men.
    ¥ The ages of the players range from 35 to 80 years.
    ¥ The season runs from January 1, through December 31.

Formed in 1994, led by Tom Patrick, Drums, the 16-piece big band consists of Tucson-based musicians with many years of experience with big bands throughout the United States. The 'Express' regularly appears at dances and concerts throughout Southern Arizona. Some of these are The Gaslight Theater, The silver & Turquoise Ball, and many large corporate functions held at the beautiful resort area in the greater Tucson Valley.

    ¥The musicians of the Central Arizona Concert Band have been selected as the best and most qualified wind and percussion musicians from the central Arizona communities of Prescott, Sedona, Cottonwood, Clarkdale. Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Mayer and Dewey. Their goal is to perform demanding concert band literature with true musical excellence, to an elite appreciative audience, with the minimal rehearsal time and have fun doing it.
    ¥ This is an amateur community organization that is composed of mixed gender players between the ages of 16 and 80+.
    ¥ This group is auditioned. The band operates between October and May of each year.
    ¥ The group has 2 1/2 hour rehearsals for 4 Saturdays before each performance date.
    ¥ The group also performs once a month during the summer of the Yavapai County Court House.

    ¥ The Cottonwood Community Band is made up of volunteers. This groups performs for the Verde River Days as well as presenting a holiday and Spring concert. Also among their performances is the Elks Flag Day ceremony and the Fourth of July Festival in Clarkdale. They also perform with the Verde Valley Voices. This group performs standard concert band literature.

    ¥The Fiesta Chorus of Sweet Adelines International is a semiprofessional women's chorus where the ages range from the early 20s into the 80's.
    ¥ The group meets on Tuesday evenings from 7 until 10 o'clock.
    ¥ The season for this group is year-round with competition in the late Spring.
    ¥ The prerequisite for membership is the ability to sing, hear harmony, commit to rehearsals and performances.
    ¥ New members need not know barbershop style but be willing to be taught this a cappella art form.
    ¥ This performance organization is dedicated to the preservation of barbershop harmony through education and performance throughout the Valley of the Sun. This is a nonprofit organization that is willing to sing for all occasions. There are expenses such as costumes, risers, rehearsal and must charge for shows as well as performing benefits.

    ¥ The Four Seasons Orchestra of Scottsdale is an all professional European style chamber orchestra. This high quality twenty five member ensemble was founded in 1991. This group performs, researches and records music of the Baroque period as well as contemporary music.
    ¥ This orchestra was nominated in two Grammy categories in 2000 and in four categories for the 2003 Governor's Arts Awards. This orchestra also presents school concerts.

    ¥ Fushicho Daiko, a Japanese Taiko drumming group, performs throughout the state at festivals and schools as part of residencies. They also perform in after-school programs and special events.
    ¥ Ages range from 15 through 70.
    ¥ The program has a beginner group that rehearses on Wednesdays from 7 until 9 p.m.; an intermediate group that rehearses on Tuesdays from 7 until 9 p.m.; an advanced group that rehearses on Thursdays from 7 until 9 p.m. and a professional group that rehearses on Mondays from 6 until 9 p.m.
    ¥ The season runs from September through June.
    ¥ Taiko surfaced centuries ago in Japan as a means of communication to signal distant villages of advancing enemies or natural disaster It was, and is, used in temples and shrines to call people to the spiritual, and for celebration of many festivals giving thanks for good crops, rain, fertility: things important to people's daily life. Fushicho Daiko interprets the timelessness of Taiko as the eternal and universal need of human beings to beat a drum.

    ¥ The City of Glendale Summer Band provides a recreational musical opportunity in a band setting.
    ¥ This band performs for eight consecutive Thursday evenings, beginning the first Thursday of June. The only exception to this is when a holiday falls on one of these Thursdays. All performances take place at 8 p.m. in the Glendale Amphitheater, 5850 W. Glendale Ave.
    ¥ The band rehearses on the Tuesday evening prior to each performance. There is also an extra rehearsal two weeks before the first performance. The rehearsals are held in the band room at Glendale High School, 6216 W. Glendale Ave., starting at 7 o'clock.
    ¥ Membership is open to any adult, and selected high school students who play a wind or percussion instrument.

The smaller size of this ensemble allows the flexibility to present more contemporary styles, as well as representative pieces from the Renaissance and Romantic periods.

    ¥ Founded in 1947, The Phoenix Symphony proudly serves the citizens of Phoenix and the surrounding metropolitan area, Arizona, and the southwestern United States. What began as an occasional group of musicians performing a handful of concerts each year (in a city of fewer than 100, 000 people) today serves more than 265,000 people annually, with 275 concerts and presentations throughout the greater Phoenix area and beyond. The 75-member Phoenix Symphony presents an annual season from September through the beginning of June, featuring full-length classical and pops concerts at Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix in Scottsdale, in Prescott, and throughout central Arizona.

    ¥ Considered one of the most prestigious competitions in the country, The Phoenix Symphony Guild Young Musicians Competition Scholarship Audition is open to all non-professional music students who reside in Maricopa County. The Guild encourages excellence in young musicians by awarding scholarships on two levels: Junior Division, grades 6 through 8; and Senior Division, grades 9 through 12.The Grand Prize Winner and Orchestral Winner performs as a soloist with the Phoenix Symphony, at Symphony Hall, in the annual Side-by-Side concert.
    ¥ Music Memory is a cultural enrichment program designed to enhance understanding and appreciation of symphonic music. Over 14,000 students in Maricopa, Yavapai, Apache and Navajo counties benefit from this program which is geared for grades 3 through 6, in public and private schools. Each year, pieces to be studied are placed in listening guides that are distributed early in the school year to each participating school for classroom study. In May of each year, students attend a concert of the studied pieces. The selections are performed by the PSG Youth Orchestra. Students in northern counties of Arizona are offered concerts in Prescott and Showlow.

    ¥ The Prosit Band of Arizona is an authentic German band composed of 15 musicians ranging in age from twenty something to eighty something, including active and retired educators, engineers, professional musicians, medical, military and administrative personnel. although it specialized in polkas and waltzes, the band's repertoire also includes many jazz, blues, tangos, Dixieland and other change-of-pace selections.

    ¥ The formation of a string quartet can be at once on exciting and risky opportunity. But with Arizona's newest addition to the chamber music scene, Quartet Sabaku, the artists involved bring not only a rich variety of performing experience to the endeavor, they bring a rich combination of friendships reaching back to their childhoods. This has resulted in a special chemistry described by listeners as "a positive, friendly dimension to their pursuit of excellence." Their name means "desert" in Japanese, and their reputation is spreading throughout Arizona following enthusiastic receptions for performances in Phoenix Cave Creek, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Sun City, Green Valley, and Wickenburg. Formed in 1997, the quartet has been juried onto the Arizona Commission on the Arts Touring/Residency Roster, was chosen to represent the state at the 2000 Festival of the Arts in Sinaloa, Mexico, and is scheduling concerts throughout the southwest for several seasons into the future. In addition to their considerable experiences performing as orchestral and chamber musicians worldwide, Quartet Sabaku members have shared their teaching expertise in public and private schools from preschool through college level. They are committed to facilitating discovery of not only music but the other arts and core subjects through the medium of the string quartet. School and community audiences become a part of performances through activities such as singing, creating story illustrations, learning about the compositional and interpretive processes, and dialoguing with the musicians.     ¥ Sedona Jazz on the Rocks is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to 'Preserve Jazz for the Next Generation.' They do this by holding jazz performances and sponsoring music education programs for Arizona youth.
    ¥ Each year SJOR holds the Weldon Bright Memorial Scholarship Competition in Sedona. Private music students living in Yavapai or Coconino counties, ages 6-14, are eligible to apply Awards are given based on financial need, student dedication and parent/family commitment.
    ¥ The SJOR-Berklee College of Music Summer Performance Programs Scholarship Competition is held in Sedona in either late March or early April each year. Any Arizona high school student who is 15 years old by July 9 each year and has at least 2 years music performance experience is eligible to audition.
    ¥ The SJOR Youth Band is a summer performance program that runs from mid-May through the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Benefit Jazz Festival. Audition are held in Sedona in April, and are open to high school students anywhere in Arizona. The band rehearses in Sedona each Saturday throughout the summer. This band has performed at the Telluride Jazz Festival, Balboa Park in San Diego and opened for Diana Krall at the Red River Music Hall in Phoenix.
    ¥ During the school year, SJOR provided in-school jazz master classes for middle and high school jazz ensembles. The clinician roster consists of 7 university and community college jazz educators who are scheduled for 2-3 hour master classes at the director's request. This master class program is completely free. Schools are scheduled each year on a first come, first served basis.

    ¥ Shouting Mountain is a national touring and performing act. Through descriptive vignettes and contemporary songs set to native flutes, drums and acoustic guitar, a musical journey through native America is presented. Shouting Mountain presents an interactive show appropriate for K-12 audiences. Shouting Mountain worked in schools across northeast Ohio from 1999 through 2001. They have now completed residencies with young audiences in Santa Cruz County where they performed in over 20 schools this year.

    ¥ The Sierra Vista Community Chorus began many years ago as a small group of people who wished to do sing-alongs at the nursing homes in the community. Over the years this group has had several directors who have been responsible for increasing the size of the group. Presently there are 80 members. The chorus performs two major concerts each year as well as other appearances. They also have smaller ensembles for performances in other venues. This chorus is recognized as one of the outstanding performing groups in Southern Arizona.

    ¥ Under the direction of Maestro James Yestadt, the 36-year old Symphony of the West Valley is artistically ranked as one of the top professional orchestras in the state of Arizona. It was awarded the ÒBest of the West' in Arts & Entertainment by WESTMARC in 2002. Offering a series of six classical and four pops concerts presented at the Sundome Center for the Performing Arts, the Symphony enriches the quality of life for residents of the West Valley by performing orchestra music at its best.
    ¥ The Symphony partners with other West Valley Arts organizations, funders and local arts councils to offer programs for K-8th grade students in the schools through presentations by small chamber groups. These reach over 1200 students per year. Also periodically perform children's programs with larger orchestra as funding is available. This organization is collaborating with Glendale Union High School District to form a 180 voice choir from 10 schools in the district to perform a Holiday Concert with the Symphony at the Sundome.
    ¥ The organization holds an annual young artist competition for 18-28 years old musicians in a 6 state region. The winner performs with the symphony in a subscription concert.

    ¥ The String Ambassadors is a performing string ensemble that consists of youth throughout Yuma County. The students must show a strong desire to perform and work hard to improve their skills. They play for a number of social functions, but are especially popular during the Christmas season for all of the winter visitors who are far from home.
    ¥ There are two ensemble: The Senior String Ambassadors with 18 members and the Junior String Ambassadors with 12 members.
    ¥ The Senior have been playing an average of 3-2 years and their ages range from 11 through 17 years.
    ¥ The Juniors have been playing 2-3 years and their ages range from 8 to 12 years.
    ¥ The groups was formed in 1987 for the purpose of encouraging children in the Yuma area to play stringed instruments. This endeavor has grown from an initial 8 players in the County to the present 350 students who play every day in the orchestral program of the public schools.
    ¥ Donations earned from performances goes towards helping to pay for education and uniforms.
